Shutters sold by Decorating Resources are manufactured from wood or PVC, or from a composite of wood covered by a vinyl coating.
Our wood shutters are fabricated from North American poplar, a dense hardwood that holds screws much better than softer woods. Best of all, the wood is kiln dried to a 9% moisture content, which is what we have in our homes using heat in winter and air conditioning in summer. Over this goes a sealer, which ensures that the moisture content will remain at the 9% level, and then we custom paint or stain our shutters to any color you choose.
PVC is not cheaper, but it is good to use where moisture is a problem, such as in a shower. The composite shutters provide the inherent strength of wood and the easy-to-clean protection of a plastic vinyl coating.
Shutters can be ordered with a variety of frames. Options include an outside frame (on the wall) and the "Z" frame, which is inside the opening with a lip on the wall. This is a wonderful choice for those pesky "out of square" windows. And of course there's the tried and true inside mount. (We don't see many of these, as the windows are usually not square. It is difficult for the drywall installers to operate on 1/16 inch tolerances.)
Did we mention the tension adjusters? Over time, if the louver gets too tight or too loose, the tension adjuster provides for an adjustment to your liking.
Sliding glass doors can easily be enhanced by using shutters that are tracked (on bypassing tracks) or that are bifold, with hinges allowing them to fold back.
